During the final days of the Civil War, Confederate leaders evacuate Richmond carrying roughly half a million dollars in gold and silver; as the group travels south, President Jefferson Davis uses the funds to pay fleeing soldiers and settle government debts; Union forces capture Davis in Georgia with only a small amount of cash on his person; a portion of the remaining money ends up stolen by bandits in Georgia, while the rest enters federal custody or stays unaccounted for.
